Why Service Buddy was built for flooring retailers—and how an outsider’s perspective helped rethink outdated workflows, admin work, and payments.

Maybe the Flooring Industry Needed an Outsider

I didn't grow up in the flooring industry.

I never installed carpet, cut a rug pad, or cleaned an area rug. I walked into my first flooring showroom four years ago as a complete outsider — and that's a big part of why Service Buddy exists.

What stood out wasn't the flooring. It was how much time really talented people spent doing annoying administrative work, often in incredibly inefficient ways.

The owner, who knew his customers, his products, and every mill rep by name, was retyping quotes into an old Word template.

The person running the schedule was sorting through Gmail calendar invites.

And some of the best people in the business were spending hours entering information into outdated software or writing things down on paper.

If you've been in flooring your whole life, that's just Tuesday.

You build workarounds. Then you build workarounds around the workarounds. Eventually, the workaround becomes the process.

So I started asking a simple question:

What if the software handled more of the admin work for them?

That question eventually became Service Buddy.

We built flooring software simple enough that people in a showroom will actually use it, with quoting, jobs, inventory, customer communication, and payments connected in one workflow.

A customer can review a quote, sign it, and pay without someone on your team creating a PDF, emailing it, chasing a signature, and manually recording the payment somewhere else.

The goal isn't to change what people in this industry are good at.

It's to give them more time to do it.

Four years later, those simple questions have turned into software that flooring businesses rely on every day. And we're still learning from showroom owners, salespeople, cleaners, installers, and operators every week.

Not growing up in the flooring industry meant we didn't come in assuming, this is just how it's done.

Maybe that outsider's perspective was exactly what this corner of the industry needed.

If you're running a flooring business and there’s a process your team has simply learned to live with, we'd love to hear about it. Those conversations are a big part of how we continue building Service Buddy.
